Pro-Life Advocate B:

Now I'm gonna have to start ranting to get it out of my system. I think it's sad when animals have more rights than unborn children. It's illegal to abuse your dog, yet you can kill your unborn child and get off scot-free. Fetuses are living things; that is a fact. Whether or not they are people is debatable (though of course I believe they are). But they are being slaughtered in the cruelest way, which I don't feel like describing; I'm sure you've already heard how it's done anyway. Murderers, rapists, and dogs are treated better than they are! This is an outrage!

Pro-Choice Advocate M:

I take it that like all Pro-Lifer's you think that all fetuses should develop into babies and be born. The fact of the matter though is that one of the reasons why fetuses do not have rights is because they have absolutely no power of decision. Also if you were to ban abortion totally you are taking the rights away from women to have abortions and you are basically saying that the government has power over a woman's body. One of the reasons that I am Pro-Choice (and note it is Pro-Choice, not Pro-Death) is that I believe that women have the right to make the decision about abortion for themselves. You ban abortion and basically you are saying that the rights of a zygote are more important than those of a woman. I wish that Pro-Lifers would stop calling it an unborn child, it is not a child, it is a fetus. In fact it is not considered a child until it is born. Now let's look at something here. Let us pretend that abortion is banned.

  1. A woman who was raped would be forced to have the baby.
  2. A woman whose life was endangered by the birth of a baby would be forced to have the baby also "We don't care about you lady, all we care about is the unborn child"
  3. Woman who can't afford to take care of a child would be forced to take care of a child if there are no shelters in the area. In some places there are not.
  4. There would be more children abandoned.
  5. The orphanages would be full of unwanted children very few of which would get adopted.
  6. After the rape a woman would have to suffer for nine months, being punished for something a man did.
  7. A baby would be born into a world that had no place for it and didn't want it.
  8. There would be unwanted children living on the streets because they were abandoned and the shelters are full.
  9. Unwanted children would grow to question there self worth, children with low self worth are more likely to get involved in drugs and crime. "No one cares about me, so why should I care?"
  10. Teenagers who become pregnant will be forced to have pregnancies their bodies can not handle.
  11. Although the law would say that of course the unborn will be protected and there welfare looked after what about the welfare of the child that has been born. "We can afford to let a few children, adolescents, and teenagers go through the cracks, but we just can't afford to the same with a fetus. They are more important!"

Of course you do hopefully realize that the things in quotes are supposed to be things that people might say if they actually believed that these laws were ethical

Nate:

Those are all bad things that you listed, but doing the right thing isn't always easy. With proper planning by a people who are devoted to doing the right thing, those things could be avoided. The problem is convincing people that it matters. If you were convinced that each conception were as important as a fully grown human being, you wouldn't purposely continue to let abortion continue to avoid those things. You would stop the abortions and then take care of the consequences as best you can... That is on what my theory for the ending of abortions is based.

Additionally, after considering the issue, I have decided that for the most part, the people who deem abortion acceptable or unacceptable probably are basing their decision on their emotions. These are probably people who would sacrifice multiple innocent strangers to save someone they know. The fetus, to the pro-choice person, is even further from their concept of a family member or friend. It's stranger than a stranger. Not only do they not know the fetus, no one really does. However, this seems to me to be no reason for changing the fetus's right-to-life status.

The emotional pro-lifer is more simple to explain. It's a baby when it comes out. We don't kill babies!

Maybe a decision on abortion one way or the other isn't actually rooted in facts. However, as I thought about this one day, I realized that I not only disagree with the typical pro-choice view, I also find it incoherent. The business of allowing abortions during certain months and not others is where I find the problem. Also, in being for abortions but against infanticide. Yeah, as odd as it sounds, if we don't say right to life exists at conception, it seems to me that logically it belongs somewhere after birth.
